How to Support Someone Going Through a Hard Time

There’s something reassuring about noticing the light beginning to change.

It doesn’t happen all at once. The evenings stretch out by a few minutes. The mornings soften. One day, you realise it’s still light when you would usually be drawing the curtains.

The season has been shifting quietly all along, and hard seasons can be a little like that too.

When someone you love is going through grief, illness, overwhelm or simply a difficult time, it’s natural to want to make things better. We look for the right words, the right gesture, or the perfect way to show we care.

But change doesn’t always arrive in one big moment.

Sometimes it’s a morning that feels slightly easier. A laugh that catches them by surprise. A little more energy. A moment when everything feels just a touch less heavy.

Small shifts can be difficult to notice while they’re happening - but they’re still shifts.

Hard times can get easier, little by little

Nature is a lovely reminder that change can happen gently.

When you’re in the middle of a hard season, progress may not look like suddenly feeling better. Often, it happens slowly and quietly.

And sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is simply be there while someone makes their way through it.

How to support someone going through a hard time

Supporting someone doesn’t mean you need to fix what they’re going through.

Often, the most meaningful acts of care are the simplest:

  • Send a message to let them know you’re thinking of them.
  • Check in again a few weeks later, when others may have stopped asking.
  • Drop off a meal or something comforting.
  • Offer specific, practical help rather than waiting for them to ask.
  • Sit with them, listen, or simply remind them they’re not alone.
  • And if you can’t be there in person, send something that lets them know you’re thinking of them from afar.

A small gesture can say: I see where you are, and I’m still here.

Because while we can’t always take away what someone is carrying, we can bring a little warmth and light to the day they’re carrying it through.

Bring a little light

As the seasons begin to shift, perhaps it’s a gentle reminder to notice the people around us too.

Who might be moving through a difficult season? Who could use a message, a meal, a cup of tea, some company - or simply the reassurance that they haven’t been forgotten?

You don’t have to have the perfect words. You don’t have to make everything better.

Sometimes one small act of care can be a little bit of light. ❤️
