Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
There’s a very good story behind these cookies...
For years, a tale did the rounds about a woman who loved a Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookie so much, she asked for the recipe. She was told it would cost “two-fifty” - only to later discover she’d been charged $250.
Outraged, she supposedly decided to share the recipe far and wide… and one of the internet’s earliest viral recipes was born.
With Father’s Day just around the corner, we thought it was the perfect excuse to share our version of this much-loved chocolate chip cookie. Rich, chocolatey and a little bit indulgent - exactly the sort of thing to bake for Dad, wrap up for him, or quietly leave on the bench with a cup of tea.
Because sometimes the best Father’s Day gifts really are the homemade ones!
Ingredients
This recipe makes 60 cookies - if that is too many, you could freeze half of the dough for later (we recommend freezing in balls), or you could halve the recipe.
250g (2 + 1/2 cups) rolled oats
280g (2 cups) flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
250g butter (cubed and softened)
200g (1 cup) brown sugar
200g (1 cup) sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
2 eggs (lightly whisked)
320g (2 cups) chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
Method
Preheat oven to 180ºC. Place baking paper or teflon sheets onto baking trays.
Place small amounts of rolled oats in a food processor at a time and process until they turn to a powder.
Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt into a separate bowl.
Place butter, brown sugar, sugar and vanilla in a bowl, or in a bowl of an electric mixer, and beat until well blended. Add eggs and mix together. Add flour mixture to butter and sugar mixture and stir until just blended. Add powdered rolled oats and stir until blended. Add chocolate chips and stir in. The dough will be stiff!
Divide dough into 60 equal-sized balls (or less if you have halved the recipe) and place dough on prepared baking trays about 5cm apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cookies are golden brown. Remove from baking trays to cool, and store in an airtight container.
